Getting your birds out of the nest in time for banding.....

It's difficult for those using classic nestboxes inside the cage, or wicker nests, to access fledglings in time to band them with the correct bandsize. To make it easier and cause less stress for everyone concerned, we use a grapevine basket/ball covered with fake pothos (using reusable plastic cable ties) on the outside and a felt nestpad on the inside - this is the "base" of the nest - then the birds fill it in with their own choice of nesting materials as they choose.

It fits perfectly and we have great breeding results. We provide nesting materials so the finches we have paired get a chance to make their own nest inside - the felt pad in the bottom of the grapevine ball is just to assure that eggs and then hatchlings don't fall thru the cracks.

We usually get materials at Michael's craft store or sometimes Walmart, wherever they are available and cheap. Re-usuable cable ties are available at Fry's Electronics .

If you can find the wire grapevine balls - they are easily washable and reusable as are the fake pothos plant/garlands. Sometimes the "real" type of grapevine balls get too yucky and we just throw them out.
